At least seven people were shot and injured on Monday afternoon after chaos erupted at the burial of the driver of Likuyani MP Enock Kibunguchy in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia.
Trouble began after a county official, a rival of Mr. Kibuguchy and also linked to the gun attack that killed the driver, arrived at the burial.
Attendants at the funeral immediately began chanting, with a section of politicians at the burial being accused of inciting the locals.
As the crowd turned rowdy, police deployed at the event opened fire, shooting at least seven people among them two bodyguards and Kapkomoy Ward MCA Ben Wanjala.
The burial was thrown into disarray as the crowd scattered with the few officers who remained at the scene being left to bury the slain driver. The injured were rushed to Mt. Elgon hospital in Kitale and nearby dispensaries.
Some of leaders at the funeral included Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula, Mr. Kibuguchy, Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu, and Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi.
The MP’s driver was shot in the head at Soy Highway Motel along Eldoret–Kitale road on Sunday, August 12 in what was termed as a botched assassination plot on Kibuguchy’s life.
Addressing the incident the next day, Mr. Kibunguchy said he was aware of at least two high-profile individuals that could have been behind the attack.
