Poor Cancer Awareness in Nigeria, Leading Cause of Death’,What About Africa?

Abuja — The Wellbeing Foundation Africa (TWFA), a non-profit organisation on health issues founded by the Wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Toyin Saraki, has expressed worry over the poor level of attention and awareness on cancer in Nigeria despite the high number of cancer causing deaths recorded yearly in the country.
The CEO, TWFA, Mrs. Amy Oyekunle, at the Nigeria Cancer Alliance Meeting in Abuja, said that the poor attention is a leading cause of cancer deaths.
Oyekumle advocated that Nigeria needs to urgently give cancer the attention it deserves, adding that the needed attention will boost awareness and information on cancer, thereby reducing cases of cancer.
"According to World Health Organisation (WHO), cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world globally.
"In Nigeria, the statistics is very bad. 72,000 people die from cancer in Nigeria every year. Also, many people present their cancer at a very late stage, some of these things can be preventable if they get the proper attention and information from the beginning," she said.
Oyekunle explained that the Cancer Alliance meeting was borne out of the need to create a better ecosystem for cancer care.
"We felt that it is necessary to bring together the different players working on cancer to create an effective strategy on handling cancer care, basically from creating awareness, nutrition, and the auto palliative care of cancer.
"The Cancer Alliance essentially combines different partners from civil societies, governments, research and academic institutions, and those working in the field of cancer in Nigeria. The meeting also hopes to create a proper structure of alliance to ensure cancer gets the attention it deserves" she explained.

She also lamented that lack of fund to treat patients, adding that total lack of equipment in hospitals is worrisome and needs to be looked into.
In the same vein, Dr. Fraser Kaura of Amref Social Enterprise, notes that the biggest problem of cancer across sub Saharan Africa is the lack of early diagnosis, screening and treatment.
Kaura stressed that it is critical for communities to give early education on preventive measures.
Also speaking, representative of Takeda, Ms. Susanne Weissbackev, explained that cancer is not a death sentence as certain types of cancers can be cured if diagnosed early.
"The alliance will try to improve diagnosis, awareness of patients to catch them as early as possible before the cancer gets worse. We want to increase the chance of every one while enhancing diagnostics in an early stage" she said.
Are African Countries Doing Enough to Prevent Cancer Deaths?
Most African countries are putting measures in place to prevent deaths from noncommunicable diseases like cancer. Tanzania is injecting funding to institutions like Ocean Road Cancer Institute to accelerate cancer treatment services and Uganda recently launched a day of physical activity to discourage citizens from risky behavior like unhealthy diets, lack of physical exercise and the use of alcohol and tobacco.

EPL: Why Manchester United should not sack Mourinho – Gary Neville

Former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, has insisted that the club will not fire manager Jose Mourinho during the season, despite the tension and bad results. Mourinho watched on as United suffered their second consecutive defeat in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur on Monday. Speaking on Monday Night Football, Neville said United should aim to let him see out the remaining two years on his deal. He saw the end of his contract at Inter Milan, he saw the end of his contract at Porto and he saw the end of his contract at Real Madrid. “It’s only at Chelsea, which is a club of madness, where this has happened. At Inter Milan, Porto and Real Madrid he saw it to the end so let’s not rewrite history. At Chelsea, everybody dies a little bit early. It’s that type of club, he’s not on his own there. “It was tough for him at Real Madrid and he got through to the end of the season. I don’t see it happening during the season. To suggest that Manchester United are li...

UK returns £70m to Nigeria

As British Prime Minister Theresa May visits Nigeria and two other African countries this week, the country reported it had returned £70 million recovered from a Nigerian, who was convicted of fraud by an Italian court. The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Paul Arkwright, said in Abuja: “There was an Italian court case with a particular person involved. A portion the fund has been in the UK and that was the portion that was returned recently from the UK to Nigeria.’’ The envoy did not mention the identity of the Nigerian involved in the offence, but said more funds would be repatriated. He stressed that his country was working with the Nigerian government to accelerate the legal process of returning the looted money. “The British government has no intention of keeping one kobo of Nigerian funds in the UK. It all must come back to Nigeria. “Just as in Nigeria, the UK feels that the judicial process is important, and we have to go through those processes before the mon...

Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Phil Jones get 5/10 in Man United defeat

Where do Manchester United go from here? There were good signs, but they were sadly far outweighed by the bad. In some ways, this 3-0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur -- their second in two games in the Premier League -- was more dispiriting than their defeat to Brighton. Against Brighton, they showed a lack of intensity throughout; here, spurred on by six changes to their starting eleven, they nevertheless succumbed to a counter-attacking performance of the most ruthless efficiency. The start of the performance was far more positive, which is what made the closing stages all the more disappointing. Positives Jesse Lingard, save one crucial miss at 0-2, was very, very good, and Luke Shaw was the pick of the team -- he has arguably been his team's best player in each of the first three games of the season. Negatives United started very well, and at a remarkable tempo, but then regressed in both match control and decision-making, their midfielders and defenders caught o...
