Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has explained the circumstances surrounding the absences of some key players in the squad that will take on Seychelles in the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Gernot Rohr
Speaking to the press in Lagos yesterday, Rohr said Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi asked to be excused because he was just recovering from an injury that had kept him out of his club squad until recently.
“I considered his excuse and the long journey he has to make from China. He needs to focus on his fitness in order to recover fully for club and country.
“In the case of Shehu Abdullahi, he is celebrating Salah. He is not ready for the match, while Tyrone Ebuehi is recovering from an injury as well.”
Rohr said Victor Moses called him to explain he wanted to concentrate on his club and have more time for his family. “Moses has a new coach who brought a new system. So he needs to work to adapt to new formation. I just hope his excuse is not a definitive retirement from the national team.”
Coach Rohr also spoke on Moses Simon. “He too is recovering from an injury. It is notr the same that prevented him from going to the World Cup.”
Former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, has insisted that the club will not fire manager Jose Mourinho during the season, despite the tension and bad results. Mourinho watched on as United suffered their second consecutive defeat in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur on Monday. Speaking on Monday Night Football, Neville said United should aim to let him see out the remaining two years on his deal. He saw the end of his contract at Inter Milan, he saw the end of his contract at Porto and he saw the end of his contract at Real Madrid. “It’s only at Chelsea, which is a club of madness, where this has happened. At Inter Milan, Porto and Real Madrid he saw it to the end so let’s not rewrite history. At Chelsea, everybody dies a little bit early. It’s that type of club, he’s not on his own there. “It was tough for him at Real Madrid and he got through to the end of the season. I don’t see it happening during the season. To suggest that Manchester United are li...
Ahead of the 2019 general elections, presidential aspirants under the different political parties have reeled out some of the tactics they plan to employ to unseat the incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari. In separate interviews with our correspondents during the week, the aspirants said contrary to the belief that only the big parties stand a better chance of winning the election, they were in the race to win, adding that Nigerians were tired of the big players in the country’s political space. A presidential aspirant under the Young Progressive Party and former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, said the party would work with others and persuade Nigerians to vote out Buhari in 2019. He said, “I am in the race for the presidency based on a vision I have for my country, which is one of nation-building to create a united country that works for all of us. I want to provide leadership that is beyond mere politics, establish an educational ...
The National Assembly Joint Committee on Electoral Matters reconvened on Thursday afternoon to consider the budget proposal for the 2019 general elections with Senators canvassing different positions. The Committee headed by Senator Suleiman Nazif (Bauchi North) is meeting to harmonise the two funding positions canvassed by President Muhammadu Buhari and INEC Chairman, Prof Yakubu Mahmud. Hardly had the Committee resumed sitting in Senate Room 328 when Senator Ovie Omo-Agege (Delta Central) started pushing for the Committee to approve the N189 billion request made by INEC Chairman, Prof Yakubu Mahmud, before the National Assembly committee on Wednesday. This position didn’t go down well with Senator Mohammed Hassan (Yobe South) who objected to Omo-Agege’s call and said the joint committee should recommend the release of N143 billion for INEC as contained in the 2019 Election Budget proposal letter sent by President Buhari to the National Assembly in July.
